Managing Stress

Support and therapy for Gosford & other Central Coast clients

The stress response is a normal and vital part of human functioning. Our stress response keeps us out of danger, and it can help us do our best when faced with challenges. However, too much stress and staying stressed for long periods of time can interfere with our performance, and can leave us feeling physically and emotionally exhausted. It is important to understand what your stressors are, and to learn how to manage stress quickly and effectively. Sometimes stressors are not easily removed, and in these situations a psychologist can help.

Symptoms of stress include irritability, concentration difficulties, sleeping problems, negative thinking, loss of appetite, lack of motivation, loss of libido, social withdrawal and mood swings. Stress can also cause skin disorders, irritable bowel syndrome, digestive problems, headaches, muscular tension, high blood pressure and bodily aches and pains.

We can help you explore the underlying causes of your stress, and then give you strategies to constructively deal with situations that trigger stress.

The Australian Psychological Society has useful information about dealing with stress.
