Professional counselling for Gosford and other areas on Central Coast

Solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT) is a short-term treatment focusing on present and future circumstances and goals rather than past experiences, symptoms, or how the problem originated. SFBT creates change by focusing on solutions rather than on the issue causing the problem. In particular, SFBT helps you develop a vision of your future and then explore your strengths and abilities that can be harnessed to create the change you want.

WHAT DOES SOLUTION-FOCUSED BRIEF THERAPY LOOK LIKE IN PRACTICE?

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy usually includes the following:

A conversational opening that explores what brought you to therapy.

A concrete discussion about the goals that you’re trying to reach.

Exploration of the instances when you did get what you needed or wanted. In this stage, you explore when and how you managed the problem differently in the past.

Scaling exercises are used to determine where you stand on some issues. From there, you explore what needs to happen to change your standpoint by even the smallest amount.

Helping you remain focused on your goals.

Discussion at the end of the session about what’s been helpful. Your therapist will also give you an agreed-upon task to create change outside the session.

WHAT ISSUES IS SOLUTION-FOCUSED BRIEF THERAPY BEST AT ADDRESSING?

Solution Focused Brief Therapy is best suited to dealing with problems such as work-related issues, some drug use, or relationship problems.
