Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT)

Professional counseling for Gosford and other areas on Central Coast

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) is a short-term goal focused therapeutic approach, which creates change by developing solutions rather than dwelling on problems.

What does Solution-Focused Brief Therapy look like in practice?

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy usually includes the following elements:

  • A conversational opening that explores what brought you to therapy.

  • A concrete discussion about the goals that you’re trying to reach.

  • Exploration of the instances when you did get what you needed or wanted. In this stage we might also explore when and how you managed the problem differently.

  • The use of a scaling exercise to determine where you stand on certain matters. From there we will explore what needs to happen to change your standpoint by even the smallest amount.

  • Helping you remain focused on your goals.

  • A discussion at the end of the session about what’s been helpful. Your psychologist will also give you a task or tasks to try at home.
